Going Gatsby Glam

One of the movies that theatre critics are raving about at the moment is the re-telling of that great F.Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby.

Having never read the book myself, I like many other movie goers found myself mesmerized by the imagery, symbolism and down right decadence of this re-imagining of a classic tale.

Baz Lurhman certainly did a good job transporting us back to nineteen twenties New York high society and the sheer opulence that was so characteristic of that era, juxtaposed against the gritty, coal mining roots of the city. I couldn't help but draw comparisons to modern day New York and in fact most big cities around the world which seem to be characterized by both exorbitant wealth and at the same time devastating poverty. The movie is somewhat of an ode to the unfairness of life and how with the right money and power, you can get away with just about anything, or at least that was my take on it.

But of course I am not a philosopher, so getting back to my fashion roots I decided to enjoy the fashion rather than the intended or unintended social commentary on the hypocrisy of capitalism.

So getting back to fashion, the movie stirred up an age old question within me...does life imitate art or does art in fact imitate the way we live?

Being captivated by the decadence and over-the-top clothing of the movies female characters (and its gorgeous male lead, Leo DiCaprio) I have decided that life and art are symbiotic. One cannot exist without the other and without relying upon the other, which is why I have decided to recreate the 1920's in my own life.

These are some of the fashion tips I learned from the movie:

You can never have too much bling. In the words of Mae West, "too much of a good thing can be wonderful" and this is my new philosophy on accessories. Without looking like a Christmas tree I broke out my old jewellery box to discover a plethora jewels I banished since the advent of the minimalist trend and I'm loving it! Unlike the movie's characters we cant have all our jewels provided by Tiffany & Co. but hey a wise man once said: "you gotta fake it until you make it".

In keeping with the accessory trend, dont forget about your head. Accessorize your head with a head scarf, head band or embellished hair clips. All of the movies female characters had on head scarves at all times which is so typical of the twenties. But it also can look modern and glamorous. Embellished head bands are amazing for evening events and special occasions.

Another good idea to recreate the Gatsby glam would be to visit vintage stores for some classic pieces, think shiny beaded ensembles, flowers, pearls and faux fur wraps. Another big trend throughout the movie was lace, done in a modest way, without showing too much skin...it was the twenties after all.

Masculine inspired fashion. Call me crazy but I found the male fashion as inspiring as the female fashion. Maybe it had something to do with my obsession with the dapper Mr Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) but masculine inspired tuxes with their clean cut are both twenties and edgy at the same time.

This is exactly what I mean, a mix of masculine and feminine with the boxy blazers and centre pleated pants still have a soft touch. Or if your mood calls for it, you can don the flowiest of little, sparkly dresses and channel your inner Daisy. These styles make me believe that anyone can pull off Gatsby Glam.

If I had to use just one word to describe the fashion in this movie it would be "glitzy" which is what makes the Gatsby fashion perfect for cocktail parties, special events or socialite soirees like the ones so opulently depicted in the movie. I cant wait to throw my own Gatsby inspired party, my excuse for lavishness!

Chic Street Style

Ok so I love a beautiful gown as much as the next person but lets be honest the average person doesn't have too many Vera Wang gowns hanging in their closet. For day to day wear its best to stick to neutral basics and add splashes of the latest trends rather than smother yourself in them head to toe.

Whether you're heading to the mall or just on a lunch date chic casual combinations are always on trend. The key with street style is that while you want to be chic, you still want to look effortless, anything too fussy just looks overdone but too little effort makes you just look messy. These are some of the inspirational looks I found as a jumping off point for my street look.

Jessica Alba is like the queen of casual chic and shes also an expert of mixing really casual basics with glamorous accessories to create an overall polished look. I also like that she often sticks to a monochromatic pallette which appeals to the obsessive compulsive in me.

Diane Kruger arrives at LAX in a navy Diane von Furstenberg studded blazer, light-washed cuffed jeans and Christian Louboutin Corbeau flats. She completes her ensemble with a white fedora, Rochas Leti bag and aviator sunglasses.

Diane Kruger proves that street style needn't be sloppy. Jeans should be one of the staples of everyone's wardrobe...they are both comfortable and chic, dressed up or down. Also they dont steal too much of the attention and allow the other pieces of your outfit to shine. Diane Kruger effortlessly combines a simple black tee and faded blue jeans with the cutest accessories...gorgeous on the run!

Kate Beckinsale arrives at Heathrow Airport in London wearing a classic black blazer with Diane von Furstenberg printed harem pants and Casadei for Prabal Gurung strappy blade wedges. Her gray scarf and quilted bag add chic touches to her ensemble.

This is how Kate Beckinsale travels...casual, comfortable and sooo stylish. I love how she keeps the top half simple because all the detail is in the pants and shoes. And a simple black blazer can work with almost any outfit and adds instant style, whereas pairing them with a plain black pants could look a bit too formal and old, more like dressing for the courtroom rather than the mall. I also love the aviators, they work on almost every face shape and what outfit doesn't look amazing with a Chanel bag?

Selena Gomez looks rocker chic on the streets of Hollywood with distressed jeans and open toed booties. A simple white tee adds crispness to an otherwise dark outfit and makes her look casual, laid back and effortless, so cool!

While out and about in Los Angeles, Spring Breakers actress Vanessa Hudgens wears an ombré maxi dress.

Vanessa Hudgens looks foxy in floral with chunky bangles and metalic flats. Her look is complimented by her tossled hair which looks like she just got up, ran her fingers through and headed out the door - although we know better, street style is all about illusion, looking effortless without it actually being effortless.

Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks effortlessly chic in a white striped top, A-line suede skirt and cognac ankle booties, while out and about in Beverly Hills.

How cute does Rosie Huntington-Whiteley look in this little skirt and booties? So simple and stylish while walking on the streets of Beverley Hills.

My final street style inspiration pic had to come from Carrie... I mean Sarah Jessica Parker who epitomizes New York street chic. Having recently returned from a trip to the Big Apple myself I found it baffling that The Sex and The City's heroines would never be caught dead in shoes anything less than a couple of inches high. After a day out in New York my feet had NEVER felt so abused, so these pics of Sarah Jessica with ballet flats and sneakers are more believable and make me, a mere mortal feel better about trapecing around New York in flats...
Here she shows us one outfit, 3 ways and I like how she mixes an otherwise dressy metallic jacket with faded blue jeans, juxtaposing the formal with the casual - perfectly demonstrating what street style should be effortless, comfortable and chic!

I can do Prep...or can I?

Like most women sometimes I start to feel a little bored and dare I say it, "old". The fact that I am quickly approaching 30 (the new benchmark for when a women supposedly should have achieved all sorts of things like my first million and a house full of kids, or be labelled a failure) didn't help.

But the difference between most "women" and true "fashionistas" is what we do when we start to feel the pangs of discontentment. Whereas most women would assess their lives and make the necessary changes to get them back on the road to achieving their goals (sensible? yeah right!) but me on the other hand, I prefer to turn to the only source that can make me feel better - Fashion and more accurately my quickest fix - internet fashion, for some much needed style inspiration (which everyone seems to be handing out in droves, qualified to do so or not), as well as some online retail therapy. What better way to spice up your life without having to bother with crowded malls, rude shop assistants and sore feet at the end of the day, right?

Now I'm not advocating going bankrupt and abandoning your life's ambitions to shop but as a wise woman once said, "I like my money where I can see it...hanging in my closet". Okay so Carrie Bradshaw isn't exactly a "real" woman per se, but the lessons she taught are, and this is one I live by.

So where would my quest begin? There are certain websites which are actually more like online fashion bibles to me, magazine sites like: Elle, Vogue, even Marie Claire to get an idea of whats hot and right on trend in the fashion capitals of the world or Saks, Barneys, Macys, H&M, the Piperlime to do some serious damage to your credit card or if you'd like to get the word on the street it doesn't get much better than blogs such as The Man Repeller or My Style Pill.

So as I perused these sites I noticed one overwhelming theme across most of them which I found interesting, the preppy chic look. Surely a person quickly approaching 30 couldn't dare pull off a look as youthful and fresh as "preppy chic", or could I?

So after my initial amusement wore off at the thought of someone as mature and I'll admit "safe" with her style being able to pull off the preppy look and still look sophisticated, without being accused of acting too young for my age, I decided to take on the challenge.

So I picked a few key "preppy" pieces which I think could work for women, whether 18 or 38 years old.

Of course no discussion about "preppyness" (not even a real word) would be complete without discussing the ultimate Prep Queen...Blair Waldorf, granted she was a fictional character, she more than any other person (real or fictional) had girls all around the world trying to pull off the preppy chic look. Although Gossip Girl may have ended, the fashion it inspired is definately eternal!

Have a look at some of these looks inspired by the Queen of the Upper East Side herself using pieces bang on trend for the moment, but also classic enough for women of any age to accomplish.

1. Simple Black and White

Everyone seems to be loving this trend at the moment and it never goes out of style, especially when you add a pop of colour with a bright headband or bag like Blair. A classic black skirt, fitted or flaired and crisp white shirt are timeless. I could see this outfit on Leighton Meester (Blair) or a mature woman like Nicole Kidman.

2. The Always Classic Cool Blazer

band of outsiders blazer

The blazer is perfect in every season and can work with most outfits to add a pop of prep to a simple outfit or to keep you warm on Autumn evening. Its best to stick to basic colours when it comes to blazers because colourful fashions come and go but black and white are always chic.

3. Cute Shorts
I jadorrrrre these shorts by Rebecca Taylor because they are preppy and stylish on sooooo many levels. The pleats in the front, the polka dots, the colour! To die! Wear them with wedges, flat pumps, mocassins or loafers...they translate from day to night.

4. Jeans for All Seasons

Okay, so if Blair's exit from the small screen left an opening for the "Queen of Prep" spot, it has most definately been filled by Emily Van Camp (Revenge's Emily.. or Amanda, who can keep up?). Her Hamptons ready style and enviable wardrobe have us tuning in each week, I'll admit I watch mostly to see what she'll be wearing.

Jeans are definately her staple and she proves, denim does not equal sloppy. Teamed with heels and a blazer, the oh-so humble denim jeans convert from a comfy lounging at home staple to stylish out-on-the-town look.

Paired with "barely there" make-up and well groomed hair I bet even I could pull off the preppy chic look, update my wardrobe, and my self-confidence.
