Going Gatsby Glam

One of the movies that theatre critics are raving about at the moment is the re-telling of that great F.Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby.

Having never read the book myself, I like many other movie goers found myself mesmerized by the imagery, symbolism and down right decadence of this re-imagining of a classic tale.

Baz Lurhman certainly did a good job transporting us back to nineteen twenties New York high society and the sheer opulence that was so characteristic of that era, juxtaposed against the gritty, coal mining roots of the city. I couldn't help but draw comparisons to modern day New York and in fact most big cities around the world which seem to be characterized by both exorbitant wealth and at the same time devastating poverty. The movie is somewhat of an ode to the unfairness of life and how with the right money and power, you can get away with just about anything, or at least that was my take on it.

But of course I am not a philosopher, so getting back to my fashion roots I decided to enjoy the fashion rather than the intended or unintended social commentary on the hypocrisy of capitalism.

So getting back to fashion, the movie stirred up an age old question within me...does life imitate art or does art in fact imitate the way we live?

Being captivated by the decadence and over-the-top clothing of the movies female characters (and its gorgeous male lead, Leo DiCaprio) I have decided that life and art are symbiotic. One cannot exist without the other and without relying upon the other, which is why I have decided to recreate the 1920's in my own life.

These are some of the fashion tips I learned from the movie:

You can never have too much bling. In the words of Mae West, "too much of a good thing can be wonderful" and this is my new philosophy on accessories. Without looking like a Christmas tree I broke out my old jewellery box to discover a plethora jewels I banished since the advent of the minimalist trend and I'm loving it! Unlike the movie's characters we cant have all our jewels provided by Tiffany & Co. but hey a wise man once said: "you gotta fake it until you make it".

In keeping with the accessory trend, dont forget about your head. Accessorize your head with a head scarf, head band or embellished hair clips. All of the movies female characters had on head scarves at all times which is so typical of the twenties. But it also can look modern and glamorous. Embellished head bands are amazing for evening events and special occasions.

Another good idea to recreate the Gatsby glam would be to visit vintage stores for some classic pieces, think shiny beaded ensembles, flowers, pearls and faux fur wraps. Another big trend throughout the movie was lace, done in a modest way, without showing too much skin...it was the twenties after all.

Masculine inspired fashion. Call me crazy but I found the male fashion as inspiring as the female fashion. Maybe it had something to do with my obsession with the dapper Mr Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) but masculine inspired tuxes with their clean cut are both twenties and edgy at the same time.

This is exactly what I mean, a mix of masculine and feminine with the boxy blazers and centre pleated pants still have a soft touch. Or if your mood calls for it, you can don the flowiest of little, sparkly dresses and channel your inner Daisy. These styles make me believe that anyone can pull off Gatsby Glam.

If I had to use just one word to describe the fashion in this movie it would be "glitzy" which is what makes the Gatsby fashion perfect for cocktail parties, special events or socialite soirees like the ones so opulently depicted in the movie. I cant wait to throw my own Gatsby inspired party, my excuse for lavishness!
